Brazilian Percussion Workshop June 26 th. Ottawa

THE HIDDEN SOUNDS OF BRAZIL

Traditional Brazilian Rhythms and Styles
A Percussion Experience

This one-day long workshop introduces the essential historical roots of Brazilian music, demonstrating how various important styles are authentically played, the original instrumentation of these styles, and finally, the experience extended to the participants to actually play these styles as a percussion ensemble. Through exhaustive research material (such as rare recordings, videotapes of some of the most important street feasts of Brazil, CDs, transcriptions) and live demonstrations, participants learn the various patterns that compose key rhythms of various Brazilian grooves, playing together as a percussion section.

Morning – 10:00am – 12:00pm
1. An overview – What makes Brazilian music Brazilian
• The African, European and Brazilian Indian musical components;
• The Brazilian sound and feel;
• Main differences between Brazilian music and music from the other Latin American countries;

2. Musical elements that form the base of some of the most important, and some not-so-well-known, Brazilian Rhythms and Styles:

Samba – Samba-de-Roda, Escolas de Samba, Batucada, Partido Alto, Bossa-nova;
Baião – Forró, Côco, Xote, Arrasta-Pé;
Maracatu de Baque Virado – from the Coronation feasts of the “Kings and Queens of the Slaves” (Congo) to the street feasts from the Carnival in Recife;
And also Ijexá, Frevo, Moçambique, Jongo;

3. Hands-On – Throughout the whole workshop participants will be playing Brazilian percussion instruments, experiencing the rhythms and grooves from the percussion section perspective;

12:00 – 1:00pm – Lunch break

Afternoon
1:00 - 2:30 – “Ritmica” - A unique approach to rhythmic development through practical exercises designed to develop in the participants a stronger sense of rhythm, helping them to internalize and to feel rhythmic figures and patterns.

2:30 – 3:15 – Percussion Ensemble practice – Another session of experiencing the rhythms and grooves through the percussion instruments.

3:15 – 3:30 – Coffee Break

3:30 – 5:00 – A concert with the “Rogerio Boccato Quarteto”, with the participation of the attendants as a percussion ensemble presenting part of the work done through the workshop in a few of the arrangements.
